>>>In the book of Genesis, there is a war that includes the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, where Lot, Abraham’s nephew, is taken captive.
>>>Abraham gathers men and goes to successfully Lot from the enmy.
>>>Abraham meets a man name Melchizedek, King of Salem and priest of God. He blesses Abraham, and Abraham gives him a tenth of everything (tithe).
*This is the only time Melchizedek is seen/mentioned until the book of Hebrews.
Hebrews 7:1–3 “For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham as he was returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth of all the spoils, was first of all, by the translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace. Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, he remains a priest perpetually.”
PASSAGE QUESTIONS:
What does this passage tell us about Melchizedek?
People describe Melchizedek as mysterious. How could he be described like that?
How does this passage connect Melchizedek to Jesus?
>>>(v.1) Mel is described as both a KING and PRIEST (interestingly before the establishment of priests through Moses).
>>>(v.2) The author breaks down the meaning of Mel’s name and where he comes from. His name means “King of Righteousness” whereas Salem means “peace”. He was “King of Peace”.
>>>(v.3) Mel is described as not having father, mother, or geneaolgy. Nobody knows where he came from or who his family is.
>>>No beginning or end-there is no record of his birth or his death-no technical end to his priesthood.
>>>One word describes Melchizedek’s background: eternal.
>>>Jesus is the righteous King and Prince of Peace, Who has always been and always will be.
>>>Typology or Christophany?
